Introduction

IThis book grew out of more than 20 years of teaching advanced undergraduate and graduate courses to a wide range of students, including those in electrical and electronics engineering, computer engineering, computer science, informatics, and interdisciplinary programs such as graduate-level automation.

Drawing on this experience, we have made the book as self-contained as possible to accommodate readers from diverse academic backgrounds. The only prerequisites are a basic understanding of calculus, elementary linear algebra, and introductory probability theory. Additional mathematical tools—such as probability, statistics, and constrained optimization—are presented in four appendices for readers who need them.

The book is designed primarily as a textbook for advanced undergraduate and graduate courses and can be used for either a one- or two-semester curriculum. It is also intended as a resource for self-study and as a reference for researchers and practicing scientists and engineers. This broader audience provided further motivation for writing the book, especially given our group’s extensive involvement in projects related to pattern recognition.
